Albert Almanza, native of Austin, joined the Mountaineer Men’s Basketball Coaching Staff in the summer of 2025. 

 

Almanza brings a unique perspective to coaching, shaped by five years of professional basketball experience in Australia and Mexico. This on-court experience allows him to relate authentically to athletes and to communicate the nuances of the game.

 

Before his international playing career, Almanza played five seasons at Sam Houston State University from 2014-2019. As a starter in his final season with the Bearkats, Almanza helped lead the team to a Southland Conference Championship in 2019. 

 

Almanza began his Coaching career as a Player Development Coach, where he started to shift his focus toward developing the next generation of basketball players. He worked with high school, collegiate, and professional athletes by helping them get to the next, including roles with TPA Academy and previously as an Assistant Coach at Huston-Tillotson University in his hometown of Austin, Texas.

 

Combining his professional background, strategic insight, and background in Player Development, Almanza is committed to building trust, fostering growth, and helping to create a winning culture.
